Gauntlets exist in many forms, ranging from flexible fabric and leather gloves to mail and fully articulated plate armor. Historically, gauntlets were used by medieval soldiers and knights. One of the famous Roman Emperors who wore leather and metal gauntlet was Maximilian I. Maximilian I was also known as King of the Germans and reigned until his death in 1493. Some medieval leather and metal gauntlets had a built-in knuckle duster. When the hand was bunched into a fist, the backhand protection becomes pronounced from the fist just above the knuckles making it usable as a melee weapon. Unless the user of this gauntlet has been disarmed, it was not a smart thing to use it as his main weapon especially when the enemy is armed with a long sword.
